3. Additional payment to the national pension

Additional payment to the national pension is a system that allows you to pay additionally for the pension that you have not paid for a temporary period due to personal reasons such as military service, business suspension, or unemployment.

In addition to the above reasons, resignation due to childbirth or childcare is included.

Since you are eligible to receive the national pension only if you have paid for at least 10 years, if you have not filled the period, the best way to fill the insufficient period is through the additional payment system. However, many people do not know about this system, so if you are an additional payer, please refer to it and apply.

1) How to apply for additional payment

Access the NPS website
Electronic Civil Complaint – Click Personal Complaint
Full menu – Application for payment of additional insurance premiums
※ When applying for additional payment to the National Pension Plan, premiums must be paid by the end of the following month in principle, and can be paid in full or in installments up to 60 months.

2) Additional payment benefits

There are also ways to increase the pension you can receive through additional contributions. The higher the premium you pay, the higher the amount of pension you receive, and you can increase the amount by extending the period of receipt.

4. National Pension Survivors Pension

Survivors’ Pension is a system in which the survivors receive pension on behalf of the deceased when a worker who has continuously paid national pension for more than 10 years dies.

Even if you do not complete the full 10 years, you can receive it if the subscription period exceeds 1/3 of the date of death or if you have paid the national pension for more than 3 years before your death.

1) Criteria for receiving survivors’ pension (in order of payment)

Parents (60 years of age or older or disability level 2 or higher)
Grandchildren (less than 19 years old or disabled level 2 or higher)
Grandparents (60 years of age or older or level 2 or older with disabilities)

The payment amount for survivors’ pension differs depending on the subscription period and payment amount.

2) Criteria for not receiving survivors’ pension

When the beneficiary dies
If the beneficiary (spouse of the deceased) remarries
When a child or grandchild of a recipient is discontinued
Survivors who intentionally cause the death of a subscriber or former subscriber
Survivors who intentionally cause the death of a person entitled to beneficiaries of survivors’ pension

※ If the beneficiary is receiving an old-age pension, it is not possible to receive the survivor’s pension and the overlapping receipt.

However, you can choose to receive either 30% of the old-age pension + survivors’ pension or the full survivors’ pension.

6. Application for exemption from payment of national pension

If you have no income for a certain period of time due to job loss or retirement, you may be temporarily exempted from paying the national pension. However, since the period of exemption from payment is not included in the subscription period, the suspended period is excluded from the subscription period when calculating the pension amount later. Excluded periods can be filled with additional payment methods.

You can apply for a payment exception by visiting a branch office of the National Pension Service, mail, fax, or through the corporation’s website.
